Beyond the Canvas: My First Exhibition and First Award
Share
When I first began my artistic journey, I had no idea where it would lead, I just knew, with absolute certainty, that this was what I was meant to do. So I didn’t wait until I was "ready," nor did I wait for reassurance. I simply started.
This year, that leap of faith led me to my first curated group exhibition, organized by Waitākere Arts. Over seven days in May 2026, I had the privilege of showing my work alongside fellow artists while running my own market stall at the event.
From opening night, the experience was unforgettable. I found myself immersed in wonderful conversations, connecting with fellow creators, and most meaningfully of all listening to people discuss and appreciate my work. Seeing how warmly my art was received was completely overwhelming in the best way possible. I tried my best to stay grounded, but my excitement was impossible to hide. Looking back, that raw initial thrill has settled into something deeper: profound gratitude.
Then came a moment I’ll never forget. Waitākere Arts contacted me to share that I had won the People’s Choice Award.
Beyond the immediate excitement, I felt immense gratitude for everyone who took the time to vote. Calling myself an "award-winning artist" still feels surreal it’s a heavy title to carry. But this recognition gave me something priceless: confidence in my work, faith in my path, and the drive to keep going.
What people said about my paintings blew me away, and everyone who stopped by became part of a milestone I will always cherish.
When I started, I worried about everything I didn't know. The truth is, I still don't know everything. The exhibition, the award, the market stall they are wonderful milestones, but they are already behind me. My career as an artist is long, and there will always be unanswered questions ahead.
I started this journey blindly, and in many ways, I am still taking that same leap. One step, one painting, and one question at a time.
